Yes, that's right-- A Zelda movie. You heard it here first. I've gathered this information from multiple sources, including the mighty James Cameron himself. A Zelda movie is in the works.
The movie will star Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as Link and Zelda respecively. It will be the first action-based musical ever made and will have a budget of over 400 million dollars, easily making it the most ambitious project ever started.
"We're very excited." said Cameron. "A movie of this kind has never been attempted before, and I'm proud to be leading us through it."
While in Titanic, Cameron constructed a huge vessel, in Zelda, he will be constructing an entire country, with down-to-the-inch detail of Hyrule. "What better way is there to do it?" shrugged Cameron, then laughed, "Maybe I'll make it into a theme park at Disney World."
Also featured in the star-studded cast will be Julia Roberts as Link's faery sidekick, Navi, and Arnold Shwarzenegger himself as Ganondorf, the prince of thieves.
"I'm a big fan of the games myself." explained DiCaprio while being interviewed about his new flick. "I know my fans think I'm a gym-rat, but actually, when I'm not at a party or anything, I spend my spare time playing the Zelda games. I'm pretty good-- I've had Zelda64 six months and I've almost got the Deku Shield."
The movie, being a musical, will have a score done by none other than James Horner. While DiCaprio will be doing his own singing (he's a Soprano), Kate Winslet will be dubbed by Celine Dion. On the soundtrack DiCaprio and Dion will do a duet together of "Somewhere Out There". "It's a wonderful gift, really." said DiCaprio on his musical skills, "But my agent never let me have any musical roles until now."
"I may sing a few lines, myself." said Shwarzenegger jokingly, before bursting into song. Let's hope he doesn't.
The movie will have over 8,000 special effects shots, done by Digital Domain. Among the CG creatures will be Moblins, Stalfos Knights, Lizalfos, and other monsters from the game. While on the set, I happened to see a scene in which Link fights the fearsome Gohma. The animator claimed that the scene would be "completely computer generated".
The movie's plot is still sketchy right now, but Cameron said that he wants, if possible, to cover all five games. "I think it's very important to show all of Hyrule's history." he explained. Unfortunately, this means the movie will be over six hours.
The film will most likely be PG. "Lot's of gore." Cameron said. "It was originally going to be 'R', but Disney was able to talk them down to PG. Teenagers are generally the big gamers out there, so I want the film directly aimed at them. The musical element, though, will help children to enjoy the film as well."
The film has actually been in developement for the last 3 years. It is expected to be out May 12th. Cameron wants it to compete with Star Wars head on. "Top this, George." Cameron smirked.
